Virgil Vernier

Born in Paris in 1976, Virgil Vernier is an actor and director. After graduating with a Master's degree in philosophy, he studies for two years at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he meets Christian Boltanski, who guides him in the making of his first video films. In 2007, he makes a name for himself with the release of Chroniques de 2005, a documentary film about the lives and dreams of five people born in 1980. He co-directs Commissariat with Ilan Klipper in 2010.

In 2009, his short film Thermidor is selected for the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes. The same year, his feature-length documentary Autoproduction, following the shooting of a film in Belleville, was presented at the Cinéma du réel Festival in Paris. The following year in Cannes, his short film Pandore, about the entrance to a Paris nightclub, is screened as part of the ACID selection.

Continuing to make numerous short films such as Orléans, Andore, Vega and Iron Maiden, Virgil Vernier directs his first feature-length fiction film Mercuriales in 2014.

His latest film Sophia Antipolis is featured in the Cineasti del presente selection at the 2018 Locarno Film Festival. His next film, 100,000 Light Years, is currently in production.
