Sergei Loznitsa

Sergei Loznitsa was born on September 5, 1964 and grew up in Kiev (Ukraine). In 1987, he graduated from the Kiev School of Applied Mathematics. From 1987-1991, he worked as a scientist at the Kiev Institute of Cybernetics, specializing in artificial intelligence research.

In 1997, Loznitsa graduated from the National Institute of Cinematography in Moscow, where he studied directing.

Sergei Loznitsa has been making films since 1996, and has now directed 21 documentaries and 4 feature films.

Loznitsa's first feature My Joy (2010) was released in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival, followed by In the Mist (2012), which was awarded the FIPRESCI prize at the 65th Cannes Film Festival. In 2017, Sergei Loznitsa presents his 3rd film A Gentle Woman in Official Competition at the Cannes Festival. In 2018, Loznitsa receives the Best Director award in the "Un Certain Regard" category at the Cannes Festival for his 3rd film, Donbass. In 2020, he directed the short film A Night at the Opera for the 3e Scène, in which he mischievously revisits the gala evenings held at the Palais Garnier since archival footage began to exist. This short is part of the collective feature film The ones who sing.

In 2013, Sergei Loznitsa founded his film production company Atoms & Void.
